Saint Louis, Senegal - Emergency Health Data Validation

healthsites.io : driving the development of baseline health facility data in OpenStreetMap with priority emergency health user stories

# The problem Health facility data is often out of date and inaccurate. A key component to national monitoring and evaluation systems is validated health facility registries. Health Data Collaborative roadmaps and reports have identified validated health facility registries as a key activity in achieving SDG Goal 3.8, Achieve universal health coverage. # The method * Identify priority attributes from the emergency health user stories. * Local OpenStreetMap users visit facilities in the field to validate the data attributes. * The validated data is updated in OpenStreetMap ## Priority emergency health user stories We record the emergency health user stories from the people who live in the area to drive the data validation process. _What are the priority user stories?_ From these user stories we identify the supporting data attributes (emergency services, doctors, beds, etc.) and which facilities have them. # The field trip to validate the data ## Mapping Matam During the field trip our team of local OpenStreetMap colleagues visited and validated health facility data throughout the district of Saint Louis. ## Facilities likely to support emergency pregnancy referrals Of the 397 facilities where data was collected, 35 have services that are most likely to support emergency pregnancy. Based on the identified needs of our persona these correspond to health facilities with the following matching data attributes in OpenStreetMap: * Healthcare/Amenity type is either a clinic or doctors or hospital * There is at least one bed * Emergency health status = yes * A telephone number## Needs To be able to make plans to access a well-staffed health facility should she need an emergency procedure. ## Serve by * Identifying local health facilities with well staffed emergency services * Supporting her in advance of the birth# Persona - Pregnant Mother# User story As a Pregnant mom I want to know where the nearest emergency health service is so that I can plan for potential complications during childbirth. The next step in our journey is to map the district of Matam. This has been demonstrated by events such as the Haiti earthquake and the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. As a result valuable time is wasted establishing accurate and accessible baseline data. Healthsites.io establishes this data and the tools necessary to upload, manage and make the data easily accessible.
